I chose “Ophelia” by Gregory Crewdson photograph because of
all the formal and conceptual qualities. The direct approach on the woman’s
body in the middle of the house makes a very interesting composition throughout
the image, because even though is in the bottom middle location of the image,
her extended horizontal body makes your eye move and see all the different
variations of colors and values in the picture. Also because she is looking up
to the ceiling gives you this sense of direction, up and down giving you a
final focus to every element given in this imagery.
This image feels like it is speaking directly to me, giving
me a sense of loneliness and leaving something behind, also there is a
sorrowful factor of something lost in time, because of how still everything
looks even though she is resting in water. Also the water reflection on the
floor gives a sense of another dimension or a door to something new. And lastly
even though this image shows tragedy and death, the variety of bright colors
implied in the composition gives a visual balance, making it a bit morbid.
